November 6...

Ignacio Colorado, that was our chosen place,
high up in the mountains, the sun smiled on our face;
I was getting' nervous with all this stuff goin' on,
I just wanted to get married, get this whole thin done.

Abby was the quiet one, happy and in control,
while we waited; hurry up I'm getting' old!
At the Sky Ute Casino, owned by the Southern Ute,
I had a headache, and boy it was a beaut!

The time had finally come, she was to be my wife,
I really had to calm down with this addition to my life,
we said our "I do's" in front of, Wilbur, a judge.
Two simple words - and I forgot my lines! Oh fudge!

Then it was (finally) over, and I had calmed down,
and I had gotten my feet back on the ground;
we stayed the night in this grand hotel,
now it's startin' to sink in! Oh well!

We'll be back on the road tomorrow, November seven,
I'm a happy man tonight, right up in seventh heaven,
how I got so lucky, one can only guess,
but I'm gonna try to be my very best.

This is dedicated to my lovely wife, Linda, on our own wedding
Anniversary, November 6.

Monte Vista….

….Colorado, that's Spanish for Mountain View,
It's seems like a good place to introduce her to you,
She's the prettiest gal I've seen in quite a while,
Abby, just the name alone makes me smile.

I'd talked her into goin' riding along to see what we might see,
Tryin' to work up the nerve, to ask her to go along with me,
Well sir we came to Monte Vista, and got tired along the way,
So I asked her if she minded, if I found a place to stay.

So I found the Blue Star Motel,
There was only one room, oh well;
She said she didn't mind - if I slept on the floor,
Of course I was hoping, for maybe a little more.

She wasn't havin' none of that, but she told me with a smile,
It might just be okay, to lay together for a while;
Well sir we started spoonin' and she was leavin' me behind,
She said if we got hitched, well, she'd wouldn't mind.

So, you see, I got one on my one good knee and pleaded,
Would you marry me Abby? You're just what I always needed.
Well sir, she said that she would be some pleased;
Just as long as I didn't spend my life down there on my knees.

Walsenburg, Colorado:

Pete was in the café in Walsenburg,
when she waltzed in, fluttered like a bird;
she had red hair and freckles on her face and arms,
and she looked at Pete and smiled, and exuded charms.

"How'd you like to go and show me around today",
and he was quite anxious, wondering what she'd say;
"I'd be quite pleased to do that, you good lookin' man",
is it really possible - she'd fallen for his plan?

They went out to door together, Pete was mighty proud;
how'd you ever meet a gal like this, he wondered out loud,
she didn't even bat an eye, she liked this handsome guy,
of course she had some friends, who would surely wonder why.

What's your name, Pete asked this new friend, meaning no harm;
he was mighty taken by her looks and her charm,
did he set his hopes up, did he wonder why, he had hopes up to the sky.
It's Abby she said, in an excited voice; it's Abby, Abby with an Y.

Colorado City…..

…..Colorado; is a WOW!
Not always but it is now,
In 1861 Colorado City was the Territory Capitol, for a short time,
The city was a bawdy place and it had quite a shine.

In 1864 a great flood wiped out half of the crops,
One month later millions of grasshoppers finished the tops,
The City had been built on an Indian crossroad,
A boundary between tribes, the streams carried quite a load.

Fancy people from back east wanted no part of the town,
But gold was discovered in Cripple Creek, that wiped away the frown!
The buildings from that time exist in town now,
All spiffed up and ready - they await your wow.

Pueblo…..

…….Colorado, is a really great place,
it started in 1934 as an Army Air Force base,
there is still an aviation museum for all to see,
the mighty B24, which made World War Two history.

The Historic Arkansas River walk goes right through town,
when riding on the boats, you won't notice a frown;
the Recreation Area is a 'gift' to the City,
all along the river trail everything is pretty.

All about the city you'll find history and grace,
and on the Arkansas River you can see a race;
or maybe just a nice slow ride, they are provided,
anyone can get in on them, nothing is one sided.

Photos: Left is a photo a night, the cars were in a show, looks like they're related to my old Ford. Right is a photo of one of the boats, people also can rent pedal boats.(not shown)
Looks like the photos will be top and bottom: The actual post comes out different than I write it some times.

Pikes Peak….

Once a teacher on summer vacation,
Climbed Pike Peak and gave the nation,
One our of most cherished songs;
Which to all of us now belongs.

America the Beautiful
Words by Katharine Lee Bates,

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

I guess you can see a lot from up there. tehachapi

Castle Rock….

….Colorado, just east of the Front Range of the Rockies lies,
Where the Arkansas and South Platt Rivers plies,
The Town of Castle Rock, and a very fine town it is now,
As in 1874 when there were two men and one cow.

It has come a long way since Jeremiah Gould gave some land,
There were cowboys, prospectors and cattle men on hand;
To form the town along the line of the Rio Grande Railway,
And they found the Rhyolite stone as the reason to stay.

I'll be here just tonight, before heading on,
Now I'm getting' anxious from here to be gone,
Home for a little rest and Meatloaf needs to ride,
But my feet will itch again and I'll be back outside.

South and west!
Rhyolite is similar to granite - the large "outcropping" in the photo is rhyolite rock.

Parker….

….Colorado, the town was founded in 1864,
Which, if we remember, was during the Civil War,
It's a lovely old town with Victorian charm,
And a populace that means us no harm.

It a little southeast of Denver, a suburb if you will,
A slight bit cold in the winter, other months just a chill;
The old Ford was coughing, coming up the road,
If you like altitude, here is the mother lode.

I've got some miles to go tomorrow, headed further south,
If we can get back in the country, I won't be so down in the mouth;
It's not that I don't like cities, but, my favorite they're not,
I suppose if I had to live in one, I would rather rot.

On the road…..
BIG news next week

Boulder....

....Colorado started when gold was found in 1858,
if you got here for anything else you are just too late,
just kidding! Mining here for gold, silver and coal,
were important until the 1950's when that got old.
The atomic clock's in Boulder, at the Bureau of Standards and Technology,
I wonder if they know what time it is, or at least what time it ought to be.
the University of Colorado is in this fair city, and Naropa U is here too,
it's based on Buddhist principals, oh the things they do.
It a very diverse city, like so many others,
that's a good thing because you can have many brothers,
tomorrow I'll not stay here long, I'll be headed south,
but I'll be here long enough, to stuff my big mouth.

Greeley....

....Colorado, once Latham Station, a stop on the Overland Trail,
then named Union Colony home of the mighty and frail;
named for Horace Greeley of "go west, young man" fame,
with a quote like that, you cannot argue the name.

This is one busy place, here on the eastern slopes,
with weather that's wild, from cold to mild, that temper ones hopes"
it's agriculture that makes the wheels turn, cropland and range,
wheat, corn and a lot of beef, to someone east it would seem strange.

There is a lot to do, even vacation on a farm,
Whoever would pay them to pick peas, well I'll be darn;
many museums and exhibitions all through the year,
visited by some, home to many who hold this place quite dear.
